Swiss Academic Degree
-
The Swiss academic degrees are the licentiate or the
diploma, and the doctorate (PhD). The licentiate or diploma corresponds to the Master's
degree in the Anglo-American system.
-
Postgraduate studies leading to the doctorate are available
at all Swiss universities. Candidates must hold a licentiate or diploma with very good
grades.
Studies
-
Courses generally last 4 - 5 years, depending on discipline,
with medicine taking 6 years.
-
Courses in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine,
pharmacy, food chemistry and surveying have to follow national requirements and are
regulated by the Federal Government.
-
Courses in law, economics and sciences and humanities are
more flexible.
General Requirements
-
A minimum age of 18.
-
An adequate knowledge of the language of instruction.
-
A state-recognized Swiss upper secondary school leaving
certificate, or a foreign equivalent.
(With a view to further opening up higher education at the
international level, Switzerland ratified the multilateral university conventions of the
Council of Europe and UNESCO in 1991. Therefore, state-recognized upper secondary
school-leaving qualifications or similar educational certificates from signatory states
give the holder a general right to admission.)

Entrance Examination
The criteria for recognition of previous qualifications or
partial recognition vary from university to university.
Candidates who hold certificates which are only partly recognized or who are asked by a
cantonal university to pass an entrance examination can sit for such an examination in
Fribourg (it takes place once a year, in September/October).
Scholarships for Foreigners
Scholarships are available for foreign postgraduate
students wishing to study at a Swiss university. Contact The Federal Commission for
Scholarship for Foreign Students (FCS) for more information: www.admin.ch/bbw
Living in Switzerland
Living costs for students (including medical insurance,
study expenses and study materials) run to about CHF 1850 - 2000 a month.
The Swiss Hotel Schools Association (ASEH) groups together leading Swiss hotel management schools
teaching their progams in French, German and/or English. ASEH members meet and abide by strict
quality standards outlined in its bylaws. For details refer to the ASEH website.
There are
internationally renowned private boarding schools, suitable for 10 to 20
years old students. They offer solid, basic fundamental education for
entering universities. Most of their alumni have good achievement in
politics, business field or other profession.
